Jewellery care

In order for jewellery made of precious metal to last as long as possible, there are some guidelines you should preferably follow. In this way, your jewellery will have the longest lifespan. Therefore, we recommend that you listen to the following advice:

  • Avoid your jewellery coming into contact with perfume, cream and hairspray
  • Avoid your jewellery being exposed to water, moisture or chemicals
  • Avoid your jewellery being exposed to sports, bathing, cooking and do not wear it when sleeping

We also recommend that jewellery is looked at at jewellers from time to time. If you have rings with stones that are used daily, these should also be inspected at least once a year.

The grips around the stone – especially on rings – wear out and occasionally need to be reinforced. Therefore, it is wise to take these precautions before it is too late. It can be expensive once the stone has fallen out.

Care products

One of the most important things you can do to take care of your jewellery is to use care products. We recommend the care products from Hagerty, where you get effective products for reasonable money.

Sterling silver 925: For your silver jewellery (rhodium-plated, gold-plated and rose-gold-plated), we recommend cleaning the jewellery in Hagerty Silver Clean. In addition, it is also a good idea to use Hagerty Silver & Jewel Cloth or Hagerty Silver Duster once in a while, which is a soft cotton cloth impregnated with polishing agent. The cloth does not need to be washed and can be used for daily maintenance.

Gemstones such as diamonds, sapphires, rubies, as well as gold and platinum: For these pieces of jewellery, we recommend Hagerty Jewel Clean, which is a cleaning formula that deeply cleans and cares for gemstones to restore their luster and brilliance. This liquid is stronger than Silver Clean, which is used for silver jewellery. For optimal results, we also recommend using Hagerty Jewel Cloth, which is a soft cotton cloth impregnated with polishing agent. The cloth does not need to be washed and can be used for daily maintenance.

Surface treatment

All metal is surface treated. Silver jewellery from Nordahl Andersen is rhodium-plated, which means that the jewellery gets a very thin layer of white rhodium on the surface. Silver jewellery can also be oxidised (here they become black) or gilded.

If you want the surface treatment of your jewellery to be renewed, you need to contact your local retailer or goldsmith.

To understand these surface treatments better, you can read more here:

Rhodium-plated silver differs from ordinary silver by being surface treated. The surface treatment gives the silver a glossy and shiny surface and helps to prevent the silver from tarnishing, i.e. that it becomes yellowish or brownish over time.

Gold-plated silver jewellery is made of sterling silver 925, and is surface-treated with a layer of 18 carat gold. A gold-plated piece of jewellery is therefore a good alternative to a gold piece of jewellery.

Oxidised silver jewellery is also made from sterling silver 925, which is artificially oxygenated, which means that it can tarnish over time. When this jewellery tarnishes, it is often seen by a black surface.

It is important to mention that common to all surface treatments is that they wear out over time. In addition, you should be aware that some people wear more on their jewellery than others, therefore it is difficult to assess how long a surface will last. In addition, there are also some people who have a certain acid in their body, which causes their jewelery to wear out faster. Jewellery also wears out faster if it comes into contact with chemicals (e.g. perfume, cream or hairspray), moisture, water, cooking and the like.

If the accident happens

Regardless of whether you wear your jewellery occasionally or every day, at some point you may find that a piece of jewellery is damaged. It can be normal wear and tear or happen accidentally. When this happens, you should contact your local jeweller, who will answer you whether the jewellery can be repaired, including at what price and what risks there may be. may be in connection with a repair.

Storage of jewellery

We recommend that you store your jewellery in a dry place. The best place to store jewellery is in a closed jewellery box. Preferably in original packaging or in a plastic bag, so that the jewellery does not scratch each other.
That is why it is not a good idea to store your jewellery in the bathroom, as the high humidity has a negative effect on the surface of your jewellery.
